MFI-FBI celebrates Arbor Day with poetry, tree-planting

The MFI Farm Business Institute (MFI-FBI) recently celebrated Philippine Arbor Day with a tree-planting activity and a poetry contest in its campus in Jala-jala, Rizal.

Arbor Day began in the US in 1872 when Nebraskan journalist and politician Julius Sterling Morton proposed a special day for tree planting and increasing awareness of the importance of trees. Here in the Philippines, it is celebrated every June 25 by virtue of Proclamation Number 642 signed by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on June 9, 2004.

MFI-FBI, an advocate of agriculture and environment conservation, began its monthly tree-planting activities last June 2009. A number of environmentally-conscious individuals along with corporate sponsors Starbucks and Vera Coulture joined MFI-FBI officials and MFI-FBI students for the tree-planting event.

Led by Zarah Perez of Rustan Coffee Corporation, Starbucks partners and employees planted trees in celebration of Arbor Day. CEO Rhona Vera Cruz of Vera Coulture has pledged to adopt seedlings to be planted at MFI-FBI for every bag sold at her store in Global City. Vera Cruz, who also manufactures the Filipino-made luxury handbags sold at her store at W. Tower 39th St., North Road Triangle, Bonifacio, Global City, adopted 70 seedlings for Arbor Day.

To promote an appreciation of trees among the youth, MFI-FBI also held a poetry competition where eight contestants read originally-composed poems before a panel of judges. First-place winner Rochie Trina V. Andallo came from the St. Michael Parochial School in Jala-jala, Rizal. A first-year student of MFI-FBI’s BS Entrepreneurial Management (BSEM) program, Clamae Jhoy Jaen from Sta. Maria National High School in Laguna, won second place. Allan Perocho, also a BSEM student and a recent graduate of Antipolo National High School, won third place in the contest. Prizes donated by Haribon Foundation were also given to members of the audience who were able to answer Arbor Day-related trivia questions.
